Thankfulness Challenge, Tuesday Truth

Tuesday Truth – Thankfulness Challenge Edition

I have not done a Tuesday Truth post in a while, but I thought I would bring it back today.  Just to mix things up a bit on the blog.  I am going to combine it with a Thankfulness Challenge post just in case I don’t get back for another post later today.

Tuesday Truth

I have a couple of truths today.

pumpkin spice

My first truth is that coffee is the elixir of the gods.  For those who do not know what elixir means (I had to look it up to make sure I was using it correctly), according to Merriam Webster’s Medical Dictionary, it is: “a sweetened liquid usually containing alcohol that is used in medication either for its medicinal ingredients or as a flavoring”.  I am currently using Coffee Mate Pumpkin Spice creamer, so my coffee is definitely sweetened and although it doesn’t contain alcohol, it is definitely medicinal for me.  I am extremely thankful for coffee and the truth is, I have thought about giving it up, but it is one of my few serious vices.  So, I’m keeping it and I’m enjoying it.

Second, life is short.  Sometimes shorter than we would consider.  A colleague at my University (whom I did not know, but one of my students had as an instructor this semester) passed away yesterday.  She was younger than me.  This is somewhat jolting.  The reason for her death has not been disclosed yet, but someone that young passing away totally unexpectedly is always a shock to the system.  So, as we approach a new year, I am thankful for my life and my health and I hope that it last a good long while.

Weekend Coffee Share

If we were having coffee today…

I found this meme a while back on Study.Read.Write. and I have not followed up on posting on it regularly.  But, I love the premise, so I’m going to go ahead and post for a second time today (!).  Two posts in one day, talk about unprecedented!  So, grab a cup o’ joe and join me at the table!

If we were having coffee today, I would tell you how much I wish I was rich or had investors who would give me some money to start a coffee shop here in Chico that had a kid’s play place – kind of like this place, which isn’t too far from us.  I really need to get some work done and I really need some coffee right now, but none of the coffee shops in Chico have much to offer a six year old.  So, here I sit.  It is probably better this way because it saves me money and allows me to get stuff done around the house, but I still think it would make a ton of money if it opened here.  So, there is my retirement plan.  I might ask if you know any investors I could hit up – or if you have some extra cash laying around yourself.  I guarantee it would be a money maker.  I can’t count the number of times mothers in the mothers club have talked about where to go for coffee and a play date.  McDonald’s just doesn’t cut it, but it is one of the only choices to keep smaller kids entertained.

If we were having coffee today, I would tell you that I’m dreading going back to work on Monday.  Really.  Dreading it.  I’m not usually like this after a week off, but this time I really enjoyed my time off and I can see it extending well into the future and not becoming a disappointment to me.  Of course, not having an income would become a disappointment to me, so I’ll be going back to work for sure.  🙂

If we were having coffee today, I would talk about how I’m torn between wanting to be more physically fit and just not having the motivation to do what needs to be done to make that happen.  I did a one mile fun walk this morning with my DD that was done in coordination with a 5K fun run and I really want to do 5Ks, but I HATE running.  I always have.  I used to swim competitively and I always felt like I was built for water sports, not those on the ground and running was a particularly painful enterprise for me.  But, now I have a bad shoulder thanks to the 20+ years of competitive swimming so I need to find some other form of exercise.  My schedule really kills my ability to take classes since it is constantly changing, so running seems like the simplest and most reasonable alternative.  But, it is running.  5Ks are always so much fun and seem so social.  I would love to be able to do that short amount of running and run in one once a month or so.  So, I might ask you if you had any advice for me to stick with a couch to 5K program.  I also might ask if you had advice about good shoes because that has also been a sticking point for me in the past.  I have a decent pair of Sauconys now, so I feel like I might have what I need in the short term.  Hmmmmmmm…

At this point, I would probably say I should get back home to grade and clean and grade and watch more of the Murder She Wrote marathon on Hallmark Movies and Mysteries.  I would ask if you have some time next weekend for coffee again, as this was really a nice break…

Wordless Wednesday

(almost) Wordless Wednesday – From Sun to Snow

Today, I traveled from California, where it was due to be sunny and in the 70s to Ohio, where we were met by this:

Snowy night pre-tournament

But, it does look pretty like this:

Snowy tree - pre-tournament Snowy tree 2

Luckily, on the way today at the Denver Airport, I found this awesome Russian themed coffee shop.  I wanted to buy one of everything just for the branding:

Daz Bog Coffee Denver Airport - Russian Tea

We’re here now.  The tournament has been delayed by three hours because of the severity of the storm tonight.  Which is great for our time change (we will actually be starting at 8 a.m. our time instead of 5 a.m. our time).  The hotel has the Hallmark Movies and Mysteries Channel and I have a hotel room to myself for four nights.  So, overall, pretty amazing.  I am hoping the roads will be mostly clear tomorrow since driving in snow is not my specialty (or even something I’m knowledgeable about).  I am hoping that I can sleep (sometimes I get a bit of insomnia in hotels) and I am hoping to discover some additional cool coffee places while I’m here.  Good night all!  Have a great (almost) wordless Wednesday!

Thursday Thumbs Up

Thumbs Up Thursday #5 – New Fall Coffee

chocolate chai tea latte
My new fall love….

Starbucks has been a mainstay for me in the coffee wars for years now.  I also will visit Peet’s and Dutch Bros., but I am a Starbucks gold card carrier and proud of it.  I have tried many of their drinks, moving from Vanilla Lattes to Mistos to just plain Lattes to Iced Teas and back and forth depending on my mood.  I have grown to dislike too-sweet drinks, so when I do any flavoring it is with half the syrup, but I do love when Fall comes around and I can get the Pumpkin Spice Latte or the Peppermint Mocha on those crisp fall mornings or to help me plow through some grading on a cold winter night.  But, I’m afraid that I may have to leave those behind this fall for their new selection, the Chocolate Chai Tea Latte.  I received a coupon for half off in my email (courtesy of the Gold Card membership) and thought I would give it a shot.  And am I glad I did.

Notice that nowhere in my list of drinks that I have tried at Starbucks did Chai Tea Latte appear.  I’m not sure why I have avoided this drink, especially considering my love of Black Tea and the Latte.  But, I remember trying it at a farmer’s market once (not Starbucks) and it tasted kind of like dirt to me, so I passed.  It may have been made with soy milk, which also makes my regular Lattes taste like dirt, but all this time, I have equated that dirt taste with Chai Tea instead.  Silly, silly me.  I ordered the drink with half the chocolate since I don’t like things to be too sweet and it was perfect.  It reminds me of a Mexican Hot Chocolate, which I also love.  Spicy, sweet, smooth and satisfying!  And it has the caffeinated punch that I need!

So, I think this will be my new go-to drink for the Fall.  And I think I may be reverting to Chai Tea Lattes when the fall season ends and we revert back to the “normal” list of drinks available.  But, if you’re looking for a new fall treat and you like your coffee with a lot of flavor, but not necessarily a lot of sweet, this drink may be for you!  Check it out the next time you’re visiting a Starbucks!
