Five Reasons I’m Trying Terrafit

If you have been reading this blog for long, you know that I struggle with commitments.  I often start things enthusiastically, only to totally give up on them a few days later.  My fitness and weight loss experience demonstrate this.  I’ve tried Jazzercise.  I went twice but just didn’t feel like it “fit” me.  I tried doing Weight Watchers but it was just all too overwhelming to keep track of the points and figure out the points when I didn’t have them, etc.  I tried to do Beachbody and the meal planning and colored containers was just too much.  I signed up for Flipping Fifty and didn’t even start it, perhaps because I am trying to dismiss my fifty-year landmark.  I have tried online fitness trackers, apps, etc.  Nothing works.  But, I’m not giving up.  I recently stumbled upon a mention of Terrafit on a blog and read up on it and here are five reasons I’m choosing to give it a try:

  1. I get points, but I don’t have to calculate them for every meal.  I love the idea of getting points for doing good (and deleting points for doing bad).  Weight Watchers was fun that way, but I got overwhelmed with having to do each meal, broken into its components to figure out the points.  This one allows me to just give myself points for eating healthy foods and take away points for eating not-so-healthy-foods.  Easy peasy lemon squeezy.  I get points for all sorts of things and they are easy to track.
  2. It uses Doterra Oils and products, but you don’t HAVE to buy them to participate.  I have fallen in love with Doterra Oils, but I don’t want to get a bunch of supplements, shakes, etc.  This program allows me to use some oils, but not necessarily do shakes, etc.  You CAN do them, but you don’t HAVE to do them.  It focuses more on eating and exercising than the products related.
  3. You can win money!  Yeah.  Weight Watchers never offered me that.  In each Terrafit challenge, there is a pot of money that is divided between coach and participants to recognize the top performers (point-wise).  It probably won’t end up being a ton of money, but I bought a whole year for $99 and that allows me to do unlimited challenges.  Usually, they are $25 each.  So, I need to do more than four in a year to get my money back.  I think I can do that.  And, there is the possibility of winning some money back.  It is like playing the lottery, but with healthy food and exercise instead of scratching.
  4. You get a coach.  I need accountability and help and a swift kick in the tush sometimes.  So, getting a personal coach sounds really good.
  5. You get to be on a team.  See #4.  I need all the help I can get!

So, there you have it.  I start my first challenge in two days.  I am the heaviest I have ever been in my life – hovering around 190, sometimes slightly under, sometimes slightly over.  That is a lot of weight on my frame.  I remember when I hit 160 in graduate school and thought I was heavy.  I haven’t grown in height since then, but I have 30 more pounds on me.  It isn’t surprising that I am tired most days, my feet hurt, my back often hurts and I just don’t feel like doing really strenuous exercise.

That has to change.  I want to be active with my daughter and my girl scouts.  I want to do fun things and go on adventures.  I want to feel good, be healthy and set a good example.  So, here goes nothing.  In six weeks, I hope to be lighter in both weight and mood.

Weekend Coffee Share

If we were having coffee today…

Definitely_one_of_those_mornings

I found this meme a while back on Study.Read.Write. and I have not followed up on posting on it regularly.  But, I love the premise, so I’m going to go ahead and post for a second time today (!).  Two posts in one day, talk about unprecedented!  So, grab a cup o’ joe and join me at the table!

If we were having coffee today, I would tell you how much I wish I was rich or had investors who would give me some money to start a coffee shop here in Chico that had a kid’s play place – kind of like this place, which isn’t too far from us.  I really need to get some work done and I really need some coffee right now, but none of the coffee shops in Chico have much to offer a six year old.  So, here I sit.  It is probably better this way because it saves me money and allows me to get stuff done around the house, but I still think it would make a ton of money if it opened here.  So, there is my retirement plan.  I might ask if you know any investors I could hit up – or if you have some extra cash laying around yourself.  I guarantee it would be a money maker.  I can’t count the number of times mothers in the mothers club have talked about where to go for coffee and a play date.  McDonald’s just doesn’t cut it, but it is one of the only choices to keep smaller kids entertained.

If we were having coffee today, I would tell you that I’m dreading going back to work on Monday.  Really.  Dreading it.  I’m not usually like this after a week off, but this time I really enjoyed my time off and I can see it extending well into the future and not becoming a disappointment to me.  Of course, not having an income would become a disappointment to me, so I’ll be going back to work for sure.  🙂

If we were having coffee today, I would talk about how I’m torn between wanting to be more physically fit and just not having the motivation to do what needs to be done to make that happen.  I did a one mile fun walk this morning with my DD that was done in coordination with a 5K fun run and I really want to do 5Ks, but I HATE running.  I always have.  I used to swim competitively and I always felt like I was built for water sports, not those on the ground and running was a particularly painful enterprise for me.  But, now I have a bad shoulder thanks to the 20+ years of competitive swimming so I need to find some other form of exercise.  My schedule really kills my ability to take classes since it is constantly changing, so running seems like the simplest and most reasonable alternative.  But, it is running.  5Ks are always so much fun and seem so social.  I would love to be able to do that short amount of running and run in one once a month or so.  So, I might ask you if you had any advice for me to stick with a couch to 5K program.  I also might ask if you had advice about good shoes because that has also been a sticking point for me in the past.  I have a decent pair of Sauconys now, so I feel like I might have what I need in the short term.  Hmmmmmmm…

At this point, I would probably say I should get back home to grade and clean and grade and watch more of the Murder She Wrote marathon on Hallmark Movies and Mysteries.  I would ask if you have some time next weekend for coffee again, as this was really a nice break…

21dayfix

Getting a Fix…21dayfix that is

21dayfix

Tomorrow I will start the 21 Day Fix, or Beachbody program.  I was brought to it by another heart mom and she has done great on it for the last four months.  It was obvious from her posts how much better she was feeling and how much energy she has, so I decided to take the plunge.  I looked into the program quite a bit and there are many things I like about it – first, the shakes are only a supplement, not a meal replacement.  Second, it focuses on real food, which I like.  It makes it more difficult, but it seems much more healthy than eating store bought bars and such.  Finally, it includes the exercise regimen (via DVDs), which makes it easy to do.  I love the containers for portioning.  I love that you get to eat three meals and three snacks a day.  I don’t love the low carb aspect because I love, love, love my carbs, but I do know that it is better for my body not to have all those carbs.

I am sure the first few days to a week will be quite difficult.  My diet has been horrendous lately.  Processed foods and fast food all. the. time.  Skipped meals.  Barely any water drank.  It will be quite the change for me.  But, I think it will be good.  I don’t even care about losing weight in all honesty.  For me, it is about having more energy, feeling better and getting more fit so I can do more with Bean.  I do a lot, and therefore I need a lot of energy.  Lately, I’ve felt not just sluggish, but downright exhausted.  Even when I sleep a decent amount.  I have lots of aches and pains.  I have no desire to go out and do fun things because I have no energy.  So, that is what I’m looking for – a boost in my energy level and feeling more healthy and fit.

Other than that, my dog is sick and the vet can’t figure out what is going on with her.  After $660 they have diagnosed her with a slow-functioning duodenum that is causing bile build up and regurgitation.  She was given a subcutaneous treatment for dehydration and a shot for nausea tonight.  She seems to feel quite bad.  I have multiple meds to give to her tomorrow to try to treat all the different things it could be – an antibiotic in case it is an infection, a dewormer in case that is causing the issue and an anti-inflammatory in case it is inflammation.  I also am giving her something to coat her esophagus and stomach to keep acid from eating away at it and I have to give her pepcid to stop any acid reflux.

So, with my daughter’s meds and the dog’s meds, I feel like I’m running some kind of infirmary around here.  Seriously.  But, I do hope this works to make the dog feel better.  I love Bella and I don’t want her to feel miserable.  It does make me realize what a bad dog owner I am, so part of what I would like to do during this 21 Day Fix is start walking her everyday for 15-20 minutes.  But, not if she is feeling poorly.  So, hopefully all these meds work and she will back to her old self and ready to walk, walk, walk!

Well, I’m off.  Hoping to get some more done tonight before heading to bed, but thinking maybe I should just get up in the morning and do the things…or tomorrow afternoon.  It is so hard to get anything done it seems.  I had a grand plan for my weekend “off” and then spent numerous hours at the vet over the course of yesterday and today.   Sigh…

Puddles
